This week I would like you to take an objective look at your level of spiritual maturity. Let us embark on a period of spiritual introspection. In this study I will attempt to investigate with clarity and insight what the Scriptures reveal as the delineators between spiritual maturity and immaturity. But we often feel powerless and confused about what it means to mature in our faith. In this series, John Piper, Founder and Teacher of and Chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary, provides clarity for Christians who want to grow up. Using multiple passages of Scripture, he coaches believers into a life of spiritual maturity.
The Book of Acts is an historical account of the first believers’ experiences after the resurrection of Jesus. In the second chapter, Peter (one of the early leaders) addresses a large crowd and many become new believers. This passage is about that group of new believers and what characterized their spiritual growth. Lesson 3 Book of James – Growing to Spiritual Maturity means growing to be like Christ. In Lesson 2 from the Book of James we saw James lay out a sequential path of growing to spiritual maturity. He carefully laid out 10 points which would lead us to our goal of being like Christ. Peter has a very similar list which leads to spiritual growth. Spiritual maturity is not: Spiritual maturity is not about age. Similar to the bumper sticker that says, “I might be getting older, but I will never grow up.” Spiritual maturity takes time, energy and effort, but it is possible to be a or year-old spiritual baby.
The other two are Spiritual Discipleship, and Spiritual Maturity. Chuck Colson called Spiritual Leadership the best book on Christian leadership that he has Christians who have been demoralized by the shallow and superfluous popular "fluff" that abounds on the topic of discipleship, this series will come as cool water in a desert. When the New Testament addresses spiritual maturity, it uses the common Greek word teleios, which means “perfect” or “complete.” When it is applied to Christian growth, it indicates spiritual maturity in contrast to childlike immaturity as, for example, in this command from Paul: “Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Having spiritual maturity involves be sensitive to the power and leadership of God's spirit. It offers us the ability to possess the same kind of AGAPE love as God. As we grow in grace and knowledge, and obey God with our whole heart, his Spirit grows as well (Acts ).
